Butterflies & Dragons EP – Trope

This debut EP by UK quintet Trope effortlessly blends soul, jazz and funk

The five musicians who comprise Trope play so well together it seems hard to believe the band formed less than a year ago. In that time, they have supported New York-based pianist Kris Bowers and have managed to produce Butterflies & Dragons, an EP that will appeal only to the most discerning music fan. If that sounds a little snooty, it’s suppose to.

Trope’s brand of soul, jazz and funk has a cerebral quality only matched by the likes of fellow musos Hiatus Kaiyote, Brotherly and, going back a decade, the wonderfully talented Quite Sane.

Standout track is Butterfly, a complex melange of frenetic melodies that chop and change with deft dexterity. It may take a few listens to grasp what’s happening on this song, but it’s worth it. The same advice applies to Let Go and Take, only more so.
