London-based Ego Ella May – who describes herself as “a self-taught guitarist, part-time beatmaker and occasional poet” – has teamed up with producer Mini-D to rework Come Close, 2002’s merry hip-hop jam by Common and Mary J. Blige. But you’d hardly recognised any trace of the original song from this version. It’s so twisted… in a good, inventive way.
Fans of outfits like Mount Kimbie and Paper Tiger will love this rendition.
Download Come Close from here and check out Ego Ella May seven-track EP Breathing Underwater at her Bandcamp page for more of the same.
For those of a curious nature, the original video featuring Common serenading a cheery young lady, is also on this page.
