Sunday Avuncular EP 2000BlackDego, of 4hero and Silhouette Brown fame, tends to tease his fans with a couple of EPs a year. Each release displays a brand of boogie and funk that has few imitators and many admirers.

Jazzy chords and dance rhythms combine on this three-track EP, which Dego co-wrote and produced with regular collaborators Kaidi Tatham and Mr Mensah (of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks).

The pounding beats of Sunday Avuncular gives woofers a workout, while Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone bounces merrily to a walking bassline. The tempo then dips slightly as the EP concludes with the jaunty Mononymous Persons.

All tracks can be sampled on this page, before you part with your hard-earned cash at the 2000 Black Bandcamp site. Songs are available as digital downloads and on vinyl.

On The Move Anthony JosephA Trinidadian poet with a doctorate in creative writing is not the typical CV of a recording artist, but urbane Parisienne label Heavenly Sweetness probably counts such erudite credentials as a plus.

Add to the mix UK saxophonist Jason Yarde and you have the makings of either a cerebral flop or a creative triumph. On The Move is the latter.

The song’s press release describes it as “somewhat chaotic” but that assessment draws the wrong conclusion. Anyone who’s familiar with Quite Sane, the group in which Jason was an integral member, will recognise that On The Move follows the award-winning band’s syncopated stylings.

Anthony’s words — a sort of stream of consciousness that encapsulates the vibrancy of the Caribbean — weaves in and out of punchy horns and jutting rhythms. It’s superb.

On The Move is taken from Anthony’s album People Of The Sun, which is scheduled for release on September 21, 2018.

Uptempo tablas meet meticulous choreography on this one-take video from a soulful London duo

Find My Way Aurora Dee RaynesUnfinished Sympathy placed Bristol’s Massive Attack on the map not only because it was a sensational song but on account of its clever one-take video. Aurora Dee Raynes no doubt hope their one-take promo for Find My Way does the same for them.

The North London duo rehearsed every weekend for five weeks to perfect this video — a commitment that’s only worth doing if the track warrants it. In this case it does.

Find My Way, with its rhythmic bass and off-beat drumming, is the kind of track multicultural London has a knack of conjuring up. Indian tablas add to its percussive groove against a backdrop of jutting, urgent chords.

Watch this beguiling video (above) before purchasing the track from Aurora Dee Raynes’s Bandcamp page.

Keyboardist adds rap and neo soul to his jazzy brand of boogie and broken beats

It’s A World Before You album Kaidi Tatham Having come to prominence at the turn of the century with broken beaters Bugz in the Attic, what you’d expect from a solo Kaidi LP is a jazzier, purer version of the west London collective’s sound. Here, however, the keyboardist has flipped the script.

While there’s still some familiar free-flowing instrumentals, Kaidi has added new ingredients to It’s A World Before You.

Slick neo soul, reminiscent of Raphael Saadiq, makes an appearance on Out Here On My Own, a head-nodding groove with his First Word labelmates Children of Zeus. More surprisingly is the hip hop from Uhmeer, son of Kaidi collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff, on the splendid Cupid. Both tracks are welcome departures from the Kaidi playbook.

DJ Jazzy Jeff’s son Uhmeer, left, appears on “It’s A World Before You” alongside First Word artists Children of Zeus

Those who hanker for Dego’s brand of boogie haven’t been ignored, though. The title track sees the former 4hero muso connect with Kaidi on a sumptuous joint, complete with sweeping strings and symphonious horns.

This blend of outside influence and Kaidi’s multi-instrumentalism makes for an LP that’s both fresh and familiar.

On this page are four tracks from It’s A World Before You, which can be spun on vinyl or downloaded from Kaidi’s Bandcamp page. Enjoy.

Smorgasbord of big beats and hip hop stylings from Canada’s boom ‘n’ bap masters

Big Luxury, this duo’s 2015 album, was a masterclass in how boom ‘n’ bap grooves should be done. Nick And Astro’s Guide To The Galaxy continues where their debut LP left off: a smorgasbord of big beats and hip hop stylings.

These Vancouver producers haven’t, however, stood still. The summery neo soul of Morning Sun builds on Big Luxury’s hits, as does the jazzy No Sleept Till MTL and the twisted interludes of Returning The Flavour.

But the signature sound of Nick Wisdom and Astrological — those distinctive boom ‘n’ bap beats — is never far away; it’s front and centre on such neck-snapping joints as Quest For Love, Do My Thing and All Alone.

On this page are three tracks from Nick And Astro’s Guide To The Galaxy, which can be bought from Potatohead People’s Bandcamp site. There, you can also sample the rest of this fine album.

Son of DJ Jazzy Jeff creates a slick hip-hop EP of soulful samples and scatter-shot rap

Play EP UhmeerSometimes giving away music is the best way for an artist to get noticed. Even esteemed DJ Jazzy Jeff has offered free downloads — and he’s had scores of hits with the likes of Will Smith and Jill Scott.

Back in 2011, Mr Jeff released Ayah’s Back For More, a splendid free album that was indistinguishable from a commercial release. And that high standard continues with his son’s 2018 EP Play, which dad produced.

On the superb Untitled, a gorgeous George Benson sample glides beneath Uhmeer’s scatter-shot rap. Bounce, meanwhile, does what it says on the tin, jumping alongside Maiya Blaney airy vocals.

On this page are two tracks from the EP, which can be downloaded at Uhmeer’s Bandcamp page.

Uhmeer describes Play as “a conversation I’m having with my father through music” — a dialogue that has indeed had a fruitful outcome. Let’s hope the father-son chats continue.

UK saxophonist joins forces with a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist to create an LP of jazz, Latin and modal goings-on

Palmares Fantasy Sean KhanFor many, Sean Khan is known for being the “SK” in SK Radicals, which produced the 2001 album When Will We Belong. The UK saxophonist was deep into the west London broken beat scene, working with the likes of Bugz in the Attic, Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue and Mark de Clive-Lowe.

But Palmares Fantasy, his new album, doesn’t contain a single syncopated rhythm although it’s just as enthralling as Sean’s bruk excursions. On the face of it the LP is a conventional jazz recording, made with Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, however there’s one addition that takes its songs up a notch: strings.

On Moment Of Collapse, the superb opener, strings swirl around Heidi Vogel’s husky vocals, while on the well-crafted title track, an orchestral layer punctuates its percussive groove.

When violins aren’t in play, there’s a flirtation with modal stylings on Said, a tune that to and fros to the echoes of ’60s Yusef Lateef. To wrap things up, Hermeto’s Latin roots take centre stage on The Blonde.

On this page are three tracks and a video from Palmares Fantasy, which is out on Joe Davis’s Far Out Recordings label. It can be purchased from all leading record stores on vinyl and as a download.

Stripped down interpretation of some refined LA neo soul

Run Away Eric Lau Kaidi Tatham MoonchildBack in 2012 this Los Angeles-based trio released their debut album Be Free to zero fanfare. No one knew who they were. A year later DJ Jazzy Jeff and James Poyser remixed the album’s title track. Off the back of that fine reworking, an overlooked LP received a plethora of plaudits and was a launchpad for two more polished neo soul albums.

On the mixing desk for Run Away — taken from Moonchild’s Voyager album — are two chaps from the broken beat/jazzy end of the music spectrum who have collaborated countless times: Eric Lau and Kaidi Tatham. Among the musicians they have worked with include Dego from 4hero, bruk collective Bugz in the Attic and, of course, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

With this remix Eric and Kaidi add a different flavour to what was already a first-rate tune. Run Away’s beats are beefed up while Amber Navran’s hushed vocals are given a tad more space to breathe.

On this page is the track alongside The List (above), a new Moonchild video also taken from their Voyager album. Click here to buy and listen to their slick, ethereal brand of neo soul.

Sumptuous jazz-funk and kindred grooves by busy UK outfit

Murmuration The ExpansionsJazz funk, which originated in the ’70s, never really died it just laid low. The genre’s most obvious reincarnation was Acid jazz in the ’80s, then came ’90s broken beats and, most recently, it’s been revived in the work of Yussef Kamaal and the 22a label.

Murmuration by The Expansions, however, doesn’t hide its jazz-funk roots; it’s there for all to hear on such high-tempo grooves as Pocket 5 and Ivory Mountain. The Brit funk of the latter complements the (Herbie) Hancock-esque Dragonfly and the more laid-back soul-jazz of Cannonball and Miles Away.

Continuing the retro theme, the quartet’s tracks have a vinyl-like warmth born of being recorded in single takes with minimal overdubs.

On this page are three tracks and a video from Murmuration, which can be bought from all major outlets here.

Apple HomePodSeveral unexpected things happen in this Apple ad for its HomePod speaker: sullen singer FKA Twigs smiles, Siri actually understands what the vocalist says, and its soundtrack is terribly good.

The Cupertino giant has enlisted the directorial skills of Spike ‘Being John Malkovich’ Jonze, who creates an elastic room that warps and bends to the whims of FKA Twigs’s wishes.

It’s all jolly enjoyable accompanied by the electronic soulfulness of Anderson .Paak’s ’Til It’s Over single — but will it be enough to topple the Amazon Echo off the smart speaker top spot?
