Hackney in East London isn’t known for its coal-mining heritage. In fact, the only coal you’d find in this trendy enclave is on a few barbecues. So how Hackney Colliery Band arrived at their name is perplexing. All we know is that, according to their website, they try to mine “nuggets of funk, hip hop and high-octane rock from the musical coalface”.
In pursuit of this laudable aim, the band have tackled Goldie’s drum ‘n’ bass classic Inner City Life from his 1995 album Timeless.
