DJ Gilla compiles a cracking 12-track album showcasing artists from independent UK label First Word Records
Arguably the best freebie of 2013 was First Word Records’ Two Syllables Volume Nine – and the UK label clearly wants to retain that honour in 2014 with its follow-up, logically entitled Two Syllables Volume Ten.
Like the previous compilation, A&R and label manager DJ Gilla has chosen 12 tracks by artists signed to (or friends of) First Word Records.
To give you a taste of what’s on offer, there are three album tracks on this page: Sleepin’ Giant’s remake of Roy Ayers’ soul-jazz classic Everybody Loves The Sunshine, The Motor Is Running by the ever-reliable Tall Black Guy and the contemporary jazz of Living On Both Sides by Ross McHenry.
Elsewhere on Volume Ten is funky hip hop by Strangelove, Afrobeat from The Fontanelles and the percussive horns of the Riot Jazz Brass Band.
